NDP MPP Doly Begum introduces Bill to Recognize Ethiopian Heritage Month

QUEEN'S PARK — Official Opposition NDP Deputy Leader Doly Begum (Scarborough Southwest) joined by MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre) introduces a Bill to mark September as Ethiopian Heritage Month in Ontario.

“It’s time to recognize, show respect and appreciation for the Ethiopian community who have contributed and continue to contribute greatly to our province. It is an opportunity to celebrate their customs, traditions, and proud history, showcasing their heritage to fellow Ontarians and preserving it for future generations to come” said Begum.

The Ethiopian Heritage Month Act, 2025, would allow the Province of Ontario to recognize September as Ethiopian Heritage Month. September holds special meaning for Ethiopian Canadians, featuring important celebrations such as Enkutatash (Ethiopian New Year), Irreechaa (Thanksgiving), and Maskel (Finding of the True Cross). The Bill seeks to formally recognize these traditions and promote greater awareness and appreciation across Ontario.

“Ethiopian Canadians have made endless contributions in Ontario and Canada while building up thriving communities. Let’s honour their legacy. I urge all MPPs to support our bill and enshrine September as Ethiopian Heritage Month as soon as possible. Ethiopian Canadians deserve this significant milestone and I’m very proud to support them”, added MPP Wong-Tam
